Authorities have issued immediate orders to vacate an Afghan refugee camp in Bannu following serious security concerns arising from a terrorist attack near the camp area. According to police sources, terrorists opened fire on a police vehicle near the Afghan refugee camp located on Kohat Road, resulting in partial damage to the vehicle. The attack occurred when Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mufeez Khan was travelling from Township to Domel. Militants who were lying in wait ambushed the police vehicle and carried out sudden and intense firing.
The attack was described as well-organized and pre-planned. However, due to the timely and effective retaliatory action by the police, the terrorists were forced to flee the scene, avoiding casualties. In the aftermath of the incident, police and district administration jointly decided to immediately evacuate the Afghan refugee camp as a precautionary security measure. The decision aims to prevent any further security threats and ensure the safety of law enforcement personnel as well as local residents.
District Police Officer (DPO) Bannu, Yasir Afridi, stated that Afghan refugees residing in the camp had already been formally granted a deadline to return to Afghanistan. He confirmed that a large number of refugee families had already repatriated voluntarily during the given timeframe.
“Considering the prevailing security situation and potential threats, the decision has been taken to vacate the camp without delay,” the DPO said, adding that the administration remains committed to maintaining law and order in the district.
Security around the area has been further strengthened, and investigations into the attack are ongoing. Law enforcement agencies have reaffirmed their resolve to take all necessary measures to counter terrorism and safeguard public security.
