Russia Warns of Persistent Security Tensions Along Afghanistan–Tajikistan Border

The Secretary of the Security Council of the Russia, Sergei Shoigu, has stated that the security situation along the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border remains tense, citing repeated attempts by individuals to cross the frontier illegally   incidents that have, at times, escalated into armed confrontations.

In remarks to the Russian news agency Interfax, Shoigu emphasized that safeguarding the border region remains a priority for regional security frameworks. He underscored that countering terrorism and combating drug trafficking continue to be key responsibilities in addressing the evolving threats emanating from the area.

According to Shoigu, multiple cases of illegal border crossings have been recorded, some of which have resulted in exchanges of fire. He noted that such developments underscore the fragile security dynamics along the frontier between Afghanistan and Tajikistan, highlighting the need for sustained vigilance and coordinated regional action.

The senior Russian official further confirmed that a comprehensive program under the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is currently being implemented to strengthen security infrastructure and defensive capabilities along the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border. The initiative aims to enhance border protection mechanisms, improve intelligence coordination, and reinforce rapid response capabilities among member states.

Looking ahead, Shoigu announced that later this year, the CSTO, alongside the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), will convene a joint meeting to assess security challenges related to Afghanistan and the broader Central Asian region. The high-level gathering is expected to focus on counterterrorism strategies, narcotics control measures, and mechanisms for enhanced multilateral cooperation.

Russian officials maintain that sustained coordination among regional organizations is essential to ensuring long-term stability and preventing the spillover of security threats into neighboring states. The forthcoming joint review signals a continued commitment by regional stakeholders to collectively address emerging risks and reinforce security across Central Asia.
