Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has voiced serious concern over the Indian leadership’s continued provocative rhetoric, urging the United Nations to take note of the growing threats to regional peace.
In a telephone conversation with UN Secretary-General António Guterres — their third call in the past two weeks — Prime Minister Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace in South Asia. He emphasized that Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire in the broader interest of regional stability, but warned that India’s aggressive posture poses a clear danger.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders discussed the tense situation in South Asia, particularly India’s recent escalations. Prime Minister Shehbaz praised the UN chief’s leadership and diplomatic efforts in de-escalating tensions and protecting the principles of the UN Charter.
“Pakistan remains committed to defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Prime Minister stated, reaffirming the country’s strong resolve to promote lasting peace in the region.
He condemned India’s false terrorism allegations and acts of aggression, calling them a “dangerous precedent” that the international community must not ignore. He also expressed grave concern over the Indian leadership’s continued inflammatory statements, describing them as a serious threat to regional stability.
The Prime Minister stressed that a just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in line with UN Security Council resolutions, is essential for sustainable peace in South Asia. He urged the Secretary-General to play an active role in facilitating such a resolution.
In response, Secretary-General Guterres welcomed the ceasefire and expressed condolences over the loss of civilian lives. He reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to staying engaged with both parties and promoting peace and stability in the region.
“Working for international peace is my duty — and the world needs it now more than ever,” Guterres stated.
