Under the special directive of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed, the Peshawar Safe City Project is progressing at an unprecedented pace to enhance security and counter terrorism in the city.

In just six months, construction work has begun at 125 key locations in Peshawar for the installation of high-resolution cameras capable of storing 30 days of footage. Activities completed so far include excavation, concrete laying, and pole installation. The project is expected to be fully operational by October 2025.

The initiative aims to strengthen surveillance against extremists and militants while also improving law enforcement’s ability to prevent street crimes and other criminal activities. “This modern technology-based policing network will help residents conduct their daily lives and business activities in a safe and secure environment,” IGP Zulfiqar Hameed said.

Following recommendations from the IGP, the provincial government approved the long-delayed Safe City Project last month. Surveys for similar installations have also been completed in terrorism-affected districts including Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, and Lakki Marwat, with work set to begin on August 11, 2025. The project will cover 86 locations in Dera Ismail Khan, 83 in Bannu, and 41 in Lakki Marwat.

In Peshawar, 105 major sites have seen significant progress, with 78% of excavation completed and 67% of poles installed, particularly in high-density areas like Hayatabad. The project represents a major step toward restoring Peshawar as a hub of peace and stability while providing law enforcement with enhanced tools to counter terrorism and organised crime.
