Pakistan, UK Conclude Strategic Dialogue on Arms Control and Disarmament

Pakistan and the United Kingdom concluded the seventh round of bilateral consultations on arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation in London, reaffirming their shared commitment to strategic stability, responsible arms governance, and global security architecture.

The high-level talks underscored the continued importance of structured, forward-looking dialogue between the two countries amid rapidly evolving regional and global security dynamics. The Pakistani delegation was led by Mr. Tahir Andrabi, Additional Secretary for Arms Control and Disarmament at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the British side was headed by Mr. Stephen Lillie, Director for Defence and International Security at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

According to Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan, the consultations featured comprehensive discussions on a range of critical issues, including strategic stability, conventional and non-conventional arms control regimes, and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Particular focus was placed on the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC), the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), and the security implications of emerging and disruptive technologies.

Both sides engaged in a candid exchange of views on the functioning and relevance of multilateral arms control platforms such as the United Nations First Committee and the Conference on Disarmament, with emphasis on the need to revitalize these forums to address contemporary challenges.

The dialogue reflected the strategic convergence between Pakistan and the UK on maintaining international peace and security through diplomacy, transparency, and responsible state behaviour in the realm of arms control and disarmament.

Reaffirming the significance of institutionalized engagement, both countries agreed to continue regular consultations and expert-level cooperation in the coming years. The next round of talks will be hosted by Pakistan in Islamabad in 2026.
