Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified its position following Russia’s recent recognition of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, calling it a matter strictly between the two sovereign nations.

At a press briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan stated, “We have taken note of Russia’s decision. Russia-Afghanistan relations are a matter between two sovereign nations.”

Khan further acknowledged that Russia has legitimate security interests in the region and emphasized Pakistan’s constructive engagement with Moscow. “Pakistan enjoys very warm and cordial relations with Russia,” he said. “Both countries are maintaining a positive trajectory and are working to further expand their bilateral cooperation.”

While Pakistan has not formally recognized the Taliban administration, it continues to maintain diplomatic ties and remains engaged with Taliban authorities on issues related to security, regional connectivity, and trade.

The statement highlights Islamabad’s careful diplomatic balancing act as regional power dynamics continue to shift in the wake of the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan.
