Pakistan’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Mohammad Sadiq Khan, held high-level talks in Islamabad with Mohammad Reza Bahrami, Director-General for South Asia at Iran’s Foreign Ministry, focusing on regional security and the escalating threat posed by militant groups operating from Afghanistan. The discussions underscored both countries’ commitment to coordinated action against terrorism and to promoting peace and stability in the region.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Sadiq Khan described the meeting as a “useful opportunity to exchange views on recent regional developments,” adding that Pakistan and Iran remain committed to working closely with regional partners to address shared security challenges, particularly cross-border militancy and extremist networks.
The talks come at a time of heightened tension along Afghanistan’s eastern border, where Pakistan has recently carried out targeted strikes against militant hideouts. Officials emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in neutralizing threats emanating from Afghanistan and ensuring long-term security and stability for neighboring countries.
Earlier in Islamabad, Sadiq Khan also met with Yusuf Sharifzoda, Tajikistan’s ambassador to Pakistan, to discuss Afghanistan and the need to strengthen counterterrorism cooperation. Both sides highlighted the significance of sharing intelligence, coordinating security measures, and supporting regional mechanisms to prevent the resurgence of extremist elements.
Through these engagements, Pakistan aims to consolidate a regional approach to peace and security, reinforcing the message that cooperation among neighboring states is essential to tackle terrorism effectively and safeguard the stability of South and Central Asia.
Security analysts described the meetings as part of Islamabad’s proactive diplomacy to engage regional partners, including Iran and Tajikistan, to jointly address the challenges posed by militant groups and to coordinate responses in light of evolving threats along the porous border with Afghanistan.
