Pakistan has strongly condemned recent remarks made by the Indian Defence Minister concerning Pakistan’s nuclear assets, describing the statement as irresponsible, provocative, and reflective of India’s insecurity in the face of Pakistan’s credible deterrence capabilities.

In a strongly worded statement issued by the Foreign Office spokesperson, Pakistan called upon the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the international community to thoroughly examine the safety and security of nuclear materials and installations in India, citing repeated incidents of theft and illegal trafficking.

“These reckless remarks are a clear manifestation of the Indian leadership’s discomfort with Pakistan’s robust defensive posture and credible deterrent strategy,” the statement read.
“Pakistan’s conventional military capability alone is sufficient to deter Indian aggression.”

India’s Nuclear Track Record Under Scrutiny

Pakistan accused India of being gripped by a self-imposed nuclear blackmail obsession, stating that the Indian Defence Minister’s comments also reflect a lack of understanding of the IAEA’s mandate and responsibilities.

The Foreign Office further highlighted multiple alarming incidents involving nuclear and radioactive materials being stolen or trafficked illegally within India, raising serious concerns about nuclear safety.

Among the incidents cited:

In Dehradun, five individuals were arrested last year for possessing a stolen radioactive device from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.

In another case, Californium, a highly radioactive and lethal substance valued at over $100 million, was recovered from a group involved in illegal trade.

Three separate thefts of Californium were also reported in 2021, exposing vulnerabilities in India’s nuclear material security and the existence of a dangerous black market.

Pakistan Demands Transparency and Accountability

Calling the situation “deeply concerning,” the Foreign Office stressed that any nation with such frequent lapses in nuclear material security poses a global risk.

“A state potentially involved in the illegal buying and selling of sensitive nuclear materials cannot be trusted with the safety of its nuclear assets,” the spokesperson stated.
“We demand transparent and comprehensive investigations into these incidents and urge India to ensure the protection of its nuclear facilities and assets.”

Pakistan’s statement comes amid heightened regional tensions and aims to shift international focus to what it describes as India’s internal failures in handling nuclear safety, rather than engaging in baseless rhetoric against its neighbours.
