Pakistan Implements Visa Requirement at Torkham to Strengthen Border Control and Trade Regulation

Pakistan has announced that, effective May 30, 2025, Afghan truck drivers will need valid visas to cross into the country. This step marks the formal end of the Temporary Admission Document (TAD) arrangement and reflects Pakistan’s effort to regulate border movement more effectively for national security and economic stability.

Officials at the Torkham border have placed visible notices about the new policy and informed Afghan drivers that only those with proper documentation will be granted entry. The decision aims to improve cross-border accountability and prevent misuse of temporary permits, which were often exploited for unauthorized or unregulated activities.

While the change may present short-term logistical challenges for Afghan traders, Pakistani authorities have clarified that the policy is in line with international border standards and is necessary to ensure orderly trade and transit. They have encouraged Afghan drivers and companies to begin the visa application process in advance to avoid disruptions.

Pakistan remains committed to facilitating legal trade and people-to-people contact with Afghanistan and has reiterated the importance of mutual cooperation in addressing border security and regional economic development.
