The Pakistan Army has inducted modern Mine Resistant Ambush Protected, MRAP, armored vehicles into its operational fleet in response to increasing threats from terrorism, landmines, and improvised explosive devices.
The MRAP vehicles are specifically designed to protect troops from landmine blasts, IED explosions, and ambush attacks during counterterrorism operations and convoy movements in sensitive and high-risk areas.
A key feature of the MRAP is its V shaped hull, which disperses the force of an explosion away from the vehicle, significantly reducing casualties among personnel inside. Due to this capability, MRAPs are increasingly being deployed in counterterrorism operations and for securing military convoys.
In terms of specifications, the MRAPs in service with the Pakistan Army are equipped with reinforced armor, advanced suspension systems, and both 4×4 and 6×6 drive configurations. The vehicles also have the capacity to mount heavy weaponry. Some advanced variants are fitted with remote controlled weapon stations, night vision equipment, and modern communication systems.
Defence sources say that Heavy Industries Taxila, along with other local entities, has played a significant role in the manufacturing and assembly of these vehicles. This has not only enhanced the Army’s operational capability but has also strengthened Pakistan’s defence self-reliance.
