Pakistan and Russia Deepen Security Dialogue on Afghanistan

Pakistan and the Russian Federation have reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening regional peace and security through enhanced dialogue and cooperation, following high-level consultations focused on counterterrorism, cross-border security, and the evolving situation in Afghanistan.

Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq, Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, met with Albert Khorev, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Pakistan, to exchange views on pressing regional security concerns. The discussions centered on the activities of militant groups operating in Afghanistan, the risks posed by cross-border terrorism, and coordinated diplomatic efforts to mitigate instability affecting South and Central Asia.

Ambassador Sadiq underscored the importance of sustained engagement among regional stakeholders to address threats posed by armed groups operating under the current Afghan administration. Both sides emphasized the need for practical cooperation, intelligence sharing, and diplomatic coordination to counter terrorism and prevent extremist networks from exploiting regional vulnerabilities.

“The security and stability of the region remain a shared responsibility,” Ambassador Sadiq noted. “Pakistan and Russia recognize the importance of close consultation to address mutual concerns, including the threat of cross-border terrorism and the broader implications of instability in Afghanistan.”

The meeting reflects Pakistan’s proactive diplomatic outreach on regional security matters. A day earlier, Ambassador Sadiq also held consultations with diplomats representing Australia, further demonstrating Islamabad’s commitment to broad-based international engagement on counterterrorism and peace-building initiatives.

Pakistan has consistently raised concerns at the United Nations regarding the alleged use of Afghan territory by militant groups to launch cross-border attacks. Islamabad has called for effective measures to ensure that Afghan soil is not used against any other country, in line with international commitments and regional security frameworks. Afghan authorities have denied these allegations.

Both Pakistan and Russia reiterated their support for a stable, peaceful, and inclusive Afghanistan, recognizing that lasting stability is essential to preventing the resurgence of extremist organizations and safeguarding regional economic and security cooperation. The two sides also agreed on the importance of continued diplomatic engagement with Afghan authorities and international partners to address humanitarian challenges and promote long-term peace.

The consultations form part of an ongoing strategic dialogue between Pakistan and Russia aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation, strengthening regional stability, and contributing to global counterterrorism efforts.

Pakistan remains committed to working closely with regional and international partners to advance peace, security, and sustainable development across South and Central Asia.
