Pakistan, Afghanistan Sign Historic Peace Agreement in Doha

In a landmark development aimed at restoring regional stability and fostering brotherly ties, Pakistan and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan on Saturday signed the Pakistan–Afghanistan Peace Agreement in Doha, pledging to uphold peace along the border, combat terrorism jointly, and strengthen humanitarian and trade relations.

The agreement, signed under the auspices of the State of Qatar, outlines a comprehensive framework for border stability, counterterrorism cooperation, trade facilitation, and mutual respect in diplomatic and media conduct. China and Iran have been designated as guarantor states, while Qatar will serve as the host and monitor for the implementation of the accord.

Under the Border Peace and Stability provisions, both countries have agreed to an immediate cessation of firing and provocations along the Chaman, Torkham, and Ghulam Khan border areas. A Joint Border Coordination Office will be established to ensure direct communication between military officials from both sides.

The Cooperation Against Terrorism clause reaffirms Afghanistan’s assurance that its territory will not be used by any group to carry out activities against Pakistan. In return, Pakistan has pledged to continue its cooperation and humanitarian support for Afghan refugees. Both sides also agreed to exchange intelligence and consider possible joint actions against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other non-state actors posing threats to peace.

In a bid to enhance Trade and Human Connectivity, the two nations will establish separate Peace Corridors at Chaman and Torkham to facilitate commerce. A special Pass System will also be introduced for traders, patients, and civilians to ensure secure and regulated cross-border movement.

The Media and Diplomatic Conduct section emphasizes the need for restraint and mutual respect, directing official spokespersons and media outlets of both nations to refrain from issuing provocative or hostile statements. Instead, both sides will prioritize messages reflecting Islamic brotherhood and goodwill.

According to the Monitoring and Guarantees article, Qatar will host quarterly review meetings to assess the progress of the agreement’s implementation. The accord will remain valid for two years from the date of signing, with an option for automatic renewal for another two years upon mutual consent.

The agreement concludes with a  enduring peace and cooperation between the two brotherly nations, seeking divine guidance for stability, harmony, and prosperity across the region.
