Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to upgrade their diplomatic representation to the level of ambassadors, marking a cautious but notable step toward normalising bilateral relations.

The agreement was confirmed during a phone call between Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, according to a statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Office.

Muttaqi welcomed Pakistan’s recent decision to appoint an ambassador to Kabul. In response, Afghanistan has elevated its top envoy in Islamabad from chargé d’affaires to ambassador.

The two ministers also reviewed progress on commitments made during their meeting on April 19, and reaffirmed their intention to maintain regular communication and build mutual trust.

Both sides underscored the strategic importance of the Uzbekistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan (UAP) railway project, a key regional infrastructure initiative. They agreed to finalise the framework agreement for the railway’s development, which is expected to enhance trade and connectivity between Central and South Asia.
