A massive wave of Afghan refugees has been returning home from Pakistan, with more than 900,000 crossing through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s frontier so far this year.
According to the Department of KP Home and Tribal Affairs, 908,905 individuals have returned via various crossings, including Torkham. The figures include 667,990 undocumented Afghans, 63,216 Afghan Citizen Card holders, and 177,789 Proof of Registration Card holders.
Border officials say the movement is one of the largest in recent years, unfolding along the rugged frontier where generations have crossed for trade, family, and refuge. Authorities have worked to ensure the process remains orderly, emphasising coordination between Pakistani and Afghan agencies to safeguard the returnees.
With thousands still expected to cross in the coming weeks, the operation highlights both the scale of migration in the region and the continued efforts to manage it efficiently while maintaining humanitarian standards.
