The Taliban’s High Commission for Addressing Refugee Problems has reported that a total of 6,774 Afghan refugees were deported from Pakistan and Iran on Wednesday, April 23.

According to the commission’s statement released on Thursday, 5,391 Afghans were expelled from Pakistan, while 1,383 were deported from Iran.

The returnees entered Afghanistan through various border points, including Torkham (3,600 people), Spin Boldak (1,719), Angoor Adda (72), Islam Qala (953), and Silk Bridge (430).

The commission noted that returning refugees were provided with financial support totalling 5.46 million Afghanis. A group of 713 returnees have already been relocated to provinces such as Ghazni, Baghlan, Kunduz, Takhar, Balkh, Jawzjan, Logar, Khost, Paktia, and Paktika.

Meanwhile, some Pakistani media outlets reported an even higher number, claiming that 9,647 Afghans were deported from Pakistan on the same day. According to these reports, nearly one million Afghans—993,089—have been deported from Pakistan to date.

The Taliban commission continues to release daily figures, including a report earlier this week stating that 4,355 Afghans had been deported on Tuesday.

According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior, over 100,000 Afghans were deported between April 1 and April 20 alone.
