Moscow Joins Tehran in Push for Dialogue Between Pakistan and Afghanistan

Russia has offered to mediate between Pakistan and Afghanistan in an effort to reduce rising tensions along the border and help stabilise the region.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, in a press briefing, said that stability in the region is a priority for Russia and for the international community. She described Pakistan and Afghanistan as important partners and noted that the tension between the two neighbours poses a threat to regional security. She added that mediation efforts can help ensure sustainable peace.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that durable solutions to conflicts can only come through negotiations. It urged Pakistan and Afghanistan to show restraint, resolve differences through dialogue, avoid steps that escalate tensions, and keep communication channels open.

It is worth recalling that a few days earlier Iran had also offered to mediate and support reconciliation between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi spoke by phone with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. He said that Iran was ready to extend all possible assistance to facilitate talks.

According to sources, Ishaq Dar and the Iranian Foreign Minister reviewed bilateral relations, regional developments, and international matters during their conversation.

Diplomatic sources said Iran expressed concern over the rising tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Iranian Foreign Minister said Iran was prepared to help in every possible way to support peace and reconciliation between the two countries.
