The Modi government is facing growing criticism over its escalating crackdown on press freedom, particularly targeting foreign media outlets. Under the guise of protecting “democracy,” the Indian government has allegedly granted unchecked power to pro-government “Godi media” while silencing dissenting voices.

Critics argue that anyone daring to speak the truth or challenge the official narrative is swiftly muzzled. Not only has domestic media come under pressure, but foreign news platforms and social media outlets have also faced increasing restrictions.A

Prominent global outlets such as China’s Global Times, Xinhua News, and Turkey’s TRT World have reportedly been blocked across India for broadcasting narratives that challenge the Indian government’s stance—especially on issues related to minorities and regional politics.

Sikh analysts have now joined the chorus of opposition, warning that Modi’s suppression of media is not just an assault on free press but a threat to democracy itself.

“Modi is a known supporter of Hindutva ideology,” one Sikh analyst remarked. “The government can’t accept defeat. Whenever someone holds up a mirror to Modi’s rule, they respond by shutting down the platform. The Modi regime is in crisis.”

International watchdogs and human rights groups have increasingly raised alarms over India’s media environment, noting a sharp decline in freedom of expression under the current administration.
