Mass Deportation: Nearly 4,000 Afghans Expelled from Pakistan and Iran in 24 Hours

The Taliban’s High Commission for Migrants’ Issues has reported that a total of 3,868 Afghan nationals were deported from Pakistan and Iran within a single 24-hour period.

According to the commission’s official statement, 1,808 individuals were expelled from Iran, while 2,055 were deported by Pakistan. The mass returns occurred on Monday via several major border crossings, including Torkham, Spin Boldak, Angoor Ada, Bahramcha, Islam Qala, and Pul-e-Abrisham.

The commission noted that 1,106 of the deportees have since been resettled across multiple provinces, such as Ghazni, Logar, Khost, Paktia, Paktika, Baghlan, Takhar, Balkh, Jowzjan, and Kunduz. Humanitarian assistance totalling 6.9 million Afghans was reportedly distributed among the returnees.

This development follows a broader and ongoing wave of deportations. The commission previously stated that on one day alone, 5,727 Afghans were returned—4,484 from Pakistan and 1,243 from Iran.

Pakistan has ramped up deportation efforts following a 30 March deadline set for the voluntary departure of undocumented migrants. According to the UNHCR, more than 120,000 Afghans were expelled during the first 25 days of this renewed phase.

The UN Refugee Agency has expressed grave concern over the fate of Afghan women and girls among the returnees, many of whom are being forced back into a restrictive environment where access to education, employment, and basic freedoms is severely curtailed.
