Major Security Operation Underway in Bajaur as Forces Target Khawarij Near Afghan Border

Pakistani security forces have launched an intelligence-based operation in the Bajaur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, targeting Khawarij elements operating near the Pakistan–Afghanistan border, according to local sources and field correspondents.

The operation is currently underway in the Shahi Tangi area of Mamond tehsil, a region known for its rugged terrain and proximity to Afghanistan’s Kunar province. Security forces have reportedly cordoned off the area and initiated a comprehensive search and clearance effort aimed at dismantling militant infrastructure and restoring stability.

According to journalist Hasbanullah, citing local security sources, forces engaged in an exchange of fire with Khawarij elements during the operation. Initial reports indicate that approximately 10 Khawarij were killed in the encounter. However, there has been no independent confirmation or response from the armed group.

Security officials stated that the operation is part of a broader effort to eliminate militant presence in border regions, where groups such as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have remained active. Authorities have reiterated concerns that militant elements maintain cross-border linkages, with alleged safe havens in Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province.

Militant groups, including the TTP, have previously denied such claims, maintaining that their operations are confined within Pakistani territory. The area has historically witnessed militant activity due to its strategic location and difficult terrain.

Officials confirmed that the current operation is large-scale in nature and will continue until the area is fully cleared of Khawarij elements. Additional reinforcements have reportedly been deployed to ensure operational effectiveness and prevent militant escape.

The Bajaur region has long been a focal point of counterterrorism efforts due to its proximity to the border and history of militant activity. Notably, former TTP chief Maulvi Fazlullah was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Afghanistan’s Kunar province in June 2018, underscoring the region’s strategic importance.

Authorities emphasized their commitment to maintaining security and stability, stating that operations will continue until all threats are neutralized and the area is declared secure.
