Kurram Elders Urge Reopening of Roads to Consolidate Peace and Ease Public Hardships

Tribal elders in Kurram have urged the government to immediately reopen key travel routes that remain closed for more than seven months, warning that continued restrictions despite a peace agreement could undermine the fragile calm in the region.

Speaking at an Eid Milan gathering in Parachinar, prominent figures—including former Senator Syed Abid Al-Hussaini, Principal Muhammad Hayat Khan, Allama Tajammul Hussain, Malik Syed Raza Hussain, Syed Ikhlaq Hussain, Haji Asghar Hussain, and Tehrik-e-Hussaini president Haji Younis Ali—called on the authorities to take urgent action to alleviate the hardships faced by the local population.

The elders noted that although peace had been established between previously clashing groups, the administration had yet to lift restrictions on major roads, severely impacting access to food, healthcare, and other vital services.

“It is unjustifiable to keep these roads closed any longer,” one of the speakers said, adding that the suffering of ordinary citizens must be prioritised now that hostilities have ceased.

They warned that the prolonged inaction could reignite tensions and lead to further instability if the government failed to restore free and safe movement. The speakers stressed that reopening the blocked routes was critical for restoring normalcy and safeguarding the well-being of residents across Kurram.
