KP’s Safe City Project to Secure Terrorism-Hit Districts

In a landmark move to fortify Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s most volatile regions, the provincial government and the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) have inked a Rs 2.2 billion agreement to launch the Peshawar Safe City Project, slated for completion within six months. Phase I will deploy 710 AI-enabled, 12 MP CCTV cameras at 125 strategic locations across Peshawar, offering real-time criminal and vehicle identification linked to police databases, instant alerts to emergency patrols, and an integrated e-challan system covering 15 traffic offences. Phase II will extend this network into six terrorism-hit southern districts—Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, North Waziristan, Tank and Karak—with 600 additional surveillance sites over the next year at a further cost of Rs 6 billion. Beyond these phases, the government plans province-wide rollout in Mardan, Kohat, Nowshera, Swat and Abbottabad, alongside the establishment of a provincial Safe City Authority to set CCTV standards and oversee public-private system integration. “Ensuring peace and protecting public life is our top priority,” said Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, underscoring how this tech-driven initiative will modernize law enforcement, boost public confidence and deliver a decisive counter-terrorism capability across KP.
