Security forces, in the Kohak area of Kalat district, recovered and defused an improvised explosive device (IED) weighing approximately 40 kilograms during an intelligence-based operation, officials said on Sunday.
According to security sources, the explosive material had been planted along a vulnerable route frequently used by security patrols and civilian transport, indicating a possible attempt to target movement in the area.
Bomb disposal teams were immediately dispatched after the discovery. The device was found connected to a battery system, around 20 meters of electrical wire, and a locally configured triggering mechanism identified as an STOS device. Experts said the configuration suggested remote detonation capability, designed to cause high-intensity damage.
The area was cordoned off before the disposal process began, and a controlled operation was carried out to neutralize the explosive material without casualties.
Security officials added that a search operation was launched in surrounding localities to trace facilitators involved in planting the device. Initial assessments point toward militant elements attempting to disrupt security operations and create fear in the region.
Forces remain on heightened alert across adjoining pockets of Kalat, with route clearance and surveillance measures further intensified to prevent similar attempts.
It’s pertinent to mention that, on February 13, a BLA commander was killed after accidentally triggering a landmine, he had planted.
