ISKP’s Head of Al-Azaim Media Arrested Red-Handed

Red-handed, Sultan Aziz Azzam, the elusive media mastermind behind ISKP’s Al-Azaim propaganda arm, was apprehended by Pakistani intelligence along the volatile Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Once a familiar voice on Nangarhar’s radio waves, Azzam had evolved into the group’s chief propagandist, orchestrating recruitment and spreading extremist messaging across the region.

He was caught red-handed when the cell he used for issuing press releases was raided—authorities found him actively typing a new press release for ISIS-K. The operation has dealt a major blow to the group, disrupting planned attacks and weakening its propaganda machinery, intelligence officials said. Several other top commanders and associates were also detained in the coordinated crackdown.

Azzam’s journey from local radio host to global terrorist propagandist is as chilling as it is instructive. Born in 1980 in Nangarhar’s Bati Kot district, he grew up in a deeply tribal and religiously conservative region. Early exposure to local governance, through his role as an adviser to the Nangarhar Provincial Council, combined with his media career at stations such as Spinghar Radio, Hamesha Bahar Radio, and Nan Radio, gave him the skills and networks that would later be exploited for extremist propaganda.

By 2013, Azzam had joined the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K), quickly rising to become the chief spokesperson and head of information operations. His fluency in Pashto and Dari, understanding of local culture, and professional media background allowed him to craft messages that resonated across both local and transnational audiences, recruiting fighters and glorifying attacks while portraying ISIS-K as a disciplined, operationally capable force.

Despite reports of his death in a U.S. drone strike in 2018, Azzam remained active, moving across borders and operating under aliases, making him a highly elusive target. His role was not limited to messaging; intelligence reports suggest he also advised on operational planning, demonstrating how strategic media use can amplify militant operations.

The Sixteenth report of the UN Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team confirms the impact of his arrest, noting that counter-terrorism operations in Pakistan and the de facto authorities’ territories have neutralised key commanders and disrupted ISIS-K’s ability to plan attacks. High-profile arrests, including Azzam and senior leader Abu Yasir al-Turki, have also forced the suspension of major propaganda platforms such as “Voice of Khorasan.”

Internationally, Azzam has long been designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist by the U.S. Treasury under Executive Order 13224, recognising the strategic value of his propaganda work in financing, recruitment, and operational support for ISIS-K. His arrest underscores a broader reality: in modern extremist movements, media and narrative control are as critical as armed fighters on the battlefield.

As ISIS-K continues to adapt, the capture of Sultan Aziz Azzam red-handed serves as a stark reminder that the battle for hearts and minds is ongoing. His story illustrates how professional expertise can be weaponized for ideology, and why dismantling these networks requires not only military might but also a strategic approach to information warfare.
