Iranian and Taliban Officials Discuss Bilateral Relations, Water Issues, and Afghan Migrants in Kabul Meeting

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Mohammad Reza Bahrami, Director General for South Asia at Iran’s Foreign Ministry and advisor to Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, met with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Kabul on Thursday. The discussions centered on key bilateral issues, including recent regional developments, water disputes, and the situation of Afghan migrants in Iran.

Hafiz Zia Ahmad, the Taliban Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson, confirmed the meeting in a post on X (formerly Twitter), noting that Alireza Bikdeli, Iran’s acting ambassador to Kabul, was also in attendance. The talks were described as a step forward in Iran-Taliban relations, with both sides expressing optimism about future cooperation.

Foreign Minister Muttaqi emphasized the positive trajectory of ties between the two nations, urging both parties to capitalize on existing opportunities for mutual benefit. Bahrami, a former two-term Iranian ambassador to Afghanistan, referenced Foreign Minister Araghchi’s recent visit to Kabul as a turning point in bilateral relations, affirming the two countries’ capacity to manage shared challenges effectively.

The meeting underscores ongoing efforts to address critical issues, including water rights—a longstanding point of contention—and the welfare of Afghan refugees in Iran. No official statement has yet been released by the Iranian Embassy in Kabul regarding Bahrami’s visit.

This engagement marks a continued dialogue between Tehran and the Taliban-led administration, reflecting both sides’ commitment to pragmatic diplomacy amid complex regional dynamics.
