Iranian authorities on Wednesday executed Mehdi Asgharzadeh, a confirmed member of the Islamic State (ISIS), after the country’s Supreme Court upheld his conviction for planning terrorist activities inside Iran. According to official sources, Asgharzadeh, son of Abdul Karim, had received combat and ideological training in Syria and Iraq under ISIS command. He later returned to Iran with the intent to carry out attacks on domestic targets, posing a significant threat to national security.
Security and intelligence agencies arrested Asgharzadeh before any operation could be executed. He was tried in accordance with Iranian anti-terrorism laws, and his conviction and death sentence were subsequently reviewed and endorsed by the Supreme Court.
The execution was carried out earlier this morning after the completion of all legal formalities. Officials stated that the action reflects the state’s unwavering commitment to confronting extremist threats and safeguarding the country from transnational terrorist networks.
