Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Aamir Iftikhar, has said that India has used the recent Pahalgam incident as a pretext to arrest more than 2,000 Kashmiris in an attempt to further suppress their legitimate struggle for the right to self-determination.
Briefing the UN Security Council, Ambassador Iftikhar highlighted the grave human rights violations being committed by Indian occupying forces in the illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, including the emergence of thousands of unmarked and unidentified graves in recent years.
Citing investigations, he said it has become evident that Indian forces abduct individuals, subject them to torture, and execute them extrajudicially without any legal proceedings.
He noted that the wave of mass detentions following the Pahalgam incident reflects a deliberate campaign to silence Kashmiri voices and dismantle their peaceful resistance.
“The Pahalgam incident has been misused to justify the arrest of over 2,000 Kashmiris, a move aimed at crushing their rightful demand for self-determination,” Ambassador Iftikhar told the Council.
The Pakistani envoy underscored that addressing the crisis of enforced disappearances in the region requires urgent attention, adding that conflict prevention and a peaceful resolution of disputes remain essential for lasting peace.
