A convoy of the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) came under an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in the Tangir Boshidas area of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) on Thursday, leaving one personnel martyred and several others injured, security sources said.
According to initial reports, the FWO team was returning to Gilgit after conducting a routine visit to the Tangir Hydropower Project when militants lying in wait targeted their vehicle with a roadside IED.
The vehicle was carrying four personnel, including a Pakistan Army major. The explosion caused significant damage to the vehicle, and the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene, embracing martyrdom. The major and the remaining personnel sustained injuries and were shifted to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Their condition is said to be stable.
Security forces stationed in the area responded immediately after the blast, engaging the assailants in a retaliatory operation. Two militants involved in the attack were eliminated during the exchange of fire.
A subsequent search and clearance operation was launched across adjoining localities, during which four suspected facilitators were taken into custody for interrogation.
The Tangir region hosts strategically significant infrastructure projects, including hydropower installations vital to regional energy development. Security has been heightened in and around project routes following the attack, and further investigations are underway to trace the wider militant network behind the incident.
