Germany Ends Afghan Refugee Program Citing Security Concerns

The German government has announced the immediate termination of its refugee program for Afghan nationals, citing serious security concerns and the involvement of Afghan refugees in criminal activities, officials and media reports confirmed.

The decision comes amid growing international concern over the Taliban’s extremist policies and their support for terrorist networks, which has compelled multiple countries, including Germany, to limit diplomatic and humanitarian engagement with Afghanistan.

According to reports from Deutsche Welle (DW), Germany has withdrawn all previous commitments and agreements related to Afghan refugees, effectively denying entry to individuals awaiting relocation under the program. As part of this action, at least 640 Afghan refugees have been refused entry into the country.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that the refugee program for Afghan nationals would be terminated immediately. The government emphasized its intention to take strict measures regarding migration and humanitarian programs in the wake of rising security threats.

A spokesperson for the German Interior Ministry stated that there is no political or legal basis remaining for Afghan refugees to enter Germany, citing Section 22 of the Residence Act as a legal foundation for denying access. DW further reported that among the Afghan nationals affected are former German military and ministry local staff, journalists, and human rights workers.

This move follows Germany’s earlier actions in 2024 and 2025, when 28 and 81 Afghan nationals respectively, involved in criminal activities, were deported from the country, according to Al Jazeera.

The escalating security and diplomatic concerns are not limited to Germany. Australia has also indicated its intention to close its Afghan embassy in Canberra if Taliban policies continue unchecked.

Experts and international observers warn that the Taliban’s continued support for terrorist activities could result in severe global consequences, including further diplomatic isolation and restrictions, with serious repercussions for the Afghan population and the wider region.

The international community has been urged to press the Taliban to immediately cease all facilitation of terrorist networks, failing which the region may face heightened instability and long-term security risks.
