Several mortar shells fired from across the Afghan frontier belt landed in the remote area of Landi Kotal, triggering panic among local residents, although no casualties were reported.
Local police sources said seven mortar shells fell near Ghakhi checkpost close to Dour Makor Chowk in the Loey Shalman area. The explosions spread fear in the locality, but fortunately no residential houses were damaged and no loss of life was reported.
Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and strengthened surveillance along sensitive frontier zones.
The incident is part of a broader pattern of cross-border projectile fire reported in recent days. Similar security concerns have been observed in Parachinar and Miranshah, where rocket and explosive projectile incidents have occasionally been reported near civilian settlements.
Earlier, at least three people were seriously injured when a mortar shell allegedly fired from the Afghan side struck a house in the Mohmand District during iftar time.
The wounded were first shifted to hospital facilities in Ghalanai. However, due to the critical condition of the injured, they were later referred to Peshawar’s Lady Reading Hospital for advanced medical treatment.
Security officials said intermittent exchanges involving heavy weapons have been observed along sections of the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier. Authorities have also noted occasional sightings of unidentified aerial objects and small drone intrusions in border zones.
In a related development, a small drone reportedly fell inside the compound of a government-run school near the educational complex in Mohmand headquarters. No casualties were reported, although parts of the drone were scattered inside the school veranda.
Earlier, mortar fire was also reported near a customs clearing office in the Torkham border area, but that incident also caused no casualties.
Security analysts say recurring projectile incidents along the western border have increased humanitarian and safety concerns among civilian populations living in vulnerable valleys and frontier settlements.
Authorities continue monitoring the border belt while investigation teams work to determine the exact origin of the mortar fire and drone intrusion.
