Recent torrential rains and flash floods in Pakistan’s tribal districts bordering Afghanistan, particularly in areas of Waziristan, have significantly increased the risk of landmines and other explosive remnants of war being washed into populated regions. Floodwaters have carried explosive devices from mountainous border areas down into streams, riverbeds, and lowland communities, posing a deadly threat to local residents, especially children.
Security agencies and local authorities have issued a public warning urging people to completely avoid riverbeds, flood paths, and unfamiliar or unsecured areas. Parents are especially advised to closely monitor their children and keep them away from places affected by flooding, where the presence of explosive devices is highly likely.
Authorities have stressed that if anyone sees a suspicious object, metallic item, or any unusual package, they must not touch it under any circumstances. Instead, they should immediately inform the nearest police station, call Rescue 1122, or alert security forces. Even minor disturbance of such objects can trigger a deadly explosion.
