China Marks 80th Anniversary of Victory Over Japan with Grand Military Parade in Beijing

Beijing witnessed a historic display of power and pageantry as China commemorated the 80th anniversary of its victory over Japan in the Second World War with a grand military parade at Tiananmen Square. The ceremony underscored China’s military might, national unity, and resolve to safeguard peace, while sending a strong message to the world about its rise as a global power.

The commemoration began with an 80-gun salute that echoed across the capital. President Xi Jinping, who is also the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, inspected the troops and delivered a keynote speech, urging the nation to choose peace over conflict while warning that China’s progress could not be halted. “History has proved that the Chinese nation has never been intimidated by any bully,” Xi said, adding that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) must accelerate its transformation into a world-class military force to safeguard sovereignty, unity, and regional stability.

The parade featured the PLA’s land, air, and naval forces in a meticulously synchronized display that left the audience in awe. China showcased its most advanced weaponry, including long-range intercontinental nuclear missiles capable of striking targets worldwide, alongside tanks, missile launch vehicles, and a spectacular aerial flypast of modern fighter jets.

Veterans of the resistance against fascism and Japanese aggression, many aged 90 and above, were honored at the ceremony. They represented the Eighth Route Army, South China Guerrilla Forces, and Kuomintang units that fought bravely in the 14-year struggle leading up to Japan’s unconditional surrender in 1945.

The event drew leaders and dignitaries from 26 countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who was positioned in the front row during the group photo session. Notably, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not invited to the commemoration.

In his address, Xi emphasized that the PLA would always remain the “heroic armed forces” trusted by the Communist Party and the Chinese people. He called on the military to provide strategic support for national rejuvenation, while pledging that China would never adopt an expansionist path despite its growing strength. He appealed to the international community to prevent the recurrence of historical tragedies and to work toward a just and equitable global order.

First Lady Peng Liyuan joined President Xi in welcoming the foreign guests, highlighting the importance of China’s diplomatic ties. A symbolic release of 80,000 doves and thousands of colorful balloons marked the conclusion of the parade, honoring those who sacrificed their lives in the war. Thousands of young performers waving national flags and singing patriotic songs added to the celebratory atmosphere. Later, a state banquet at the Great Hall of the People was scheduled to conclude the day’s commemorations.
