The United Nations has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating economic and security situation in Afghanistan, cautioning that the country has fallen into severe economic collapse and international isolation since the Taliban assumed power.
According to a recent UN report on counter-financing terrorism, Afghanistan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contracted by 6.5 percent in early 2025. The report highlights a stark economic decline that has left millions of Afghans struggling to survive. Unemployment has soared to an alarming 75 percent, while over 30 million citizens are living in extreme poverty.
The report further indicates that Afghanistan remains excluded from the global banking system, effectively cutting off foreign investment, financial aid, and international trade. This prolonged isolation has compounded the nation’s economic hardships and severely restricted opportunities for growth and development.
The United Nations emphasized that the Taliban government cannot obtain any form of financial or legal recognition on the international stage without demonstrating a commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms.
“Afghanistan is at a crossroads,” the report warns. “Without urgent reforms and adherence to international norms, the country faces further economic deterioration, social instability, and prolonged isolation from the global community.”
The UN continues to call on the Taliban authorities to engage with the international community transparently and uphold human rights, underscoring that sustained support and engagement are contingent upon responsible governance and respect for the rule of law.
