Afghan Cleric Shot Dead in Peshawar; Police Launch Probe

An Afghan cleric was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Peshawar, police said, as investigations were launched to determine the motive and identify the perpetrators. According to police, the victim, Adam Khan, an Afghan national from Paktia province, was attacked while returning home on his motorcycle near the Raza Khan Maryamzai Mosque. He sustained fatal gunshot wounds and died on the spot.

Law enforcement officials reached the site soon after the incident, cordoned off the area, and collected forensic evidence. “An investigation has been initiated, and every aspect of the case is being examined,” a police spokesperson said, adding that no group had so far claimed responsibility.

Local residents said the incident had caused concern among members of the Afghan community living in the vicinity. Police and district authorities have enhanced patrolling and coordination in the area to maintain law and order.

Pakistan has recently intensified its repatriation process for undocumented foreign nationals, ensuring compliance with legal procedures. Officials maintain that the initiative targets only those residing without valid documentation, while registered refugees continue to receive protection under national and international frameworks.

The government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining security, upholding the law, and ensuring the safety of all communities residing in the country.

International agencies have been engaged in coordination with Pakistan to facilitate the voluntary and orderly repatriation of Afghan nationals, with humanitarian assistance being extended through established mechanisms. Observers say continued cooperation between Pakistan and international organisations remains essential to addressing humanitarian challenges and ensuring regional stability.
