Five soldiers were injured in a shooting at Fort Stewart, the U.S. Army base announced on social media Wednesday. The sprawling post in southeast Georgia went into lock-down after reports of an active shooter.
Fort Stewart, the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi and home to thousands of soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division and their families, instructed personnel in the affected areas to “stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors.” All base gates were temporarily closed due to the lock-down.
The shooter was reported near the 2nd Armoured Brigade Combat Team area, according to the fort. The base’s three elementary schools, with nearly 1,400 students, were also placed on lock-down, while three nearby schools implemented precautionary measures.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp confirmed he was in contact with responding law enforcement officials. U.S. Representative Buddy Carter, representing the district including Fort Stewart, said he is monitoring the situation.
Authorities have not yet released details about the shooter or the motive, and investigations are ongoing.
