The Pakistan Navy has seized narcotics worth approximately $96 million in two successful counter-smuggling operations in the Arabian Sea, reinforcing Pakistan’s broader counterterrorism efforts to dismantle the nexus between drug trafficking, organized crime and terrorism.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Pakistan Navy ship Yarmook intercepted two boats far off the Pakistani coast and recovered approximately 850 kilograms of ice (crystal methamphetamine) and 2,000 kilograms of hashish/cannabis concealed in compartments aboard the vessels.

The seized narcotics, with an estimated combined value of $96 million, have been taken into custody and will be handed over to the relevant authorities for further legal proceedings.

The operations highlight the strategic importance of disrupting illicit maritime supply chains that can generate substantial proceeds for criminal networks and potentially finance terrorist activities. Pakistani civil and military officials have repeatedly stressed that dismantling the narco-terror and organized-crime nexus is a fundamental component of an effective counterterrorism strategy, as cutting off illegal revenue streams can weaken the operational and financial capacity of terrorist networks.

Drug trafficking and other illicit activities can provide criminal infrastructure, logistical channels and funding opportunities that may be exploited by terrorist organizations. Preventing the movement of narcotics by sea therefore serves not only as a law-enforcement measure but also as part of wider efforts to curb illicit financing and strengthen national and regional security.

The military’s media wing said the successful interceptions demonstrated the Pakistan Navy’s sustained maritime surveillance, professional capabilities and unwavering commitment to regional maritime security. The Navy continues to play an active role in preventing the smuggling of narcotics and other prohibited goods through Pakistan’s maritime approaches.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Pakistan Navy officers and personnel for their professionalism and successful operations against drug smuggling.

He described the interceptions as an effective step against narcotics trafficking and commended the Navy’s role in preventing illegal activities. The prime minister reaffirmed that Pakistan would continue taking all possible measures to combat drug smuggling, adding that the operations reflected the country’s unwavering commitment to regional maritime security.

The seizures underscore how maritime interdiction can complement broader counterterrorism efforts by disrupting illicit trade routes, strengthening enforcement against criminal networks and limiting potential sources of terrorist financing.
