Pakistan and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism, enhancing security cooperation, and promoting regional stability during the fourth round of the US-Pakistan Counterterrorism Dialogue held in Washington.
The high-level discussions were led by US Coordinator for Counterterrorism Ambassador Gregory LoGerfo and Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry Special Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir, with both sides emphasizing the importance of sustained cooperation against evolving terrorist threats.
According to a joint statement issued following the dialogue, the discussions highlighted the shared interests underpinning the US-Pakistan counterterrorism partnership and reflected both countries’ determination to confront organizations that threaten the security of their citizens and the stability of the region.
“Delegations exchanged views on the current threat environment, explored avenues to enhance collaboration, and discussed steps to strengthen border security and disrupt terrorist facilitation networks,” the statement said.
During the dialogue, both sides specifically highlighted concerns posed by terrorist organizations including ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K), Al Qaeda, Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its affiliates, reaffirming their joint resolve to counter groups that endanger regional and international security.
The two governments agreed to further strengthen bilateral and multilateral counterterrorism cooperation, improve coordination, and continue joint efforts aimed at safeguarding their populations and advancing a shared vision of peace, prosperity, and stability.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office stated that the two sides held extensive discussions on the regional and global terrorism landscape and pledged to deepen cooperation through bilateral channels as well as international forums.
The renewed engagement comes amid a period of evolving regional security challenges, with both countries seeking to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Following the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in 2021, Washington and Islamabad had faced differences over regional security concerns, including the presence of militant networks and cross-border threats. In recent years, both sides have increasingly focused on practical cooperation in counterterrorism, trade, investment, climate initiatives, and regional stability.
Pakistan’s strategic position in the region and its diplomatic engagement with neighboring countries have continued to increase its importance in regional security discussions. Islamabad has also played an active diplomatic role in addressing wider regional tensions.
The latest counterterrorism dialogue takes place as Pakistan continues to face significant internal security challenges. Recent assessments have highlighted an increase in violence linked to terrorist attacks and security operations, underscoring the importance of enhanced domestic and international coordination against terrorism.
Alongside security cooperation, Pakistan and the United States are also making progress toward strengthening bilateral economic relations.
Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb held a virtual meeting with US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer to review progress on ongoing negotiations aimed at developing a reciprocal trade framework between the two countries.
According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Finance, the discussions focused on expanding bilateral trade, improving market access, encouraging investment, and enhancing economic cooperation.
The engagement followed the Finance Minister’s recent visit to Washington, where he held meetings with senior US officials and representatives from key economic institutions, including the Office of the US Trade Representative, US Export-Import Bank, US International Development Finance Corporation, and the International Monetary Fund.
During those discussions, both sides explored opportunities related to tariffs, investment partnerships, infrastructure financing, energy projects, and private-sector development.
The Finance Ministry stated that Minister Aurangzeb welcomed the progress achieved by negotiating teams and appreciated the constructive engagement between the two countries.
He emphasized that a stronger trade and investment partnership with the United States would support Pakistan’s export-led growth strategy, enhance economic resilience, and create greater opportunities for businesses in both countries.
The minister also highlighted the importance of continued cooperation with US financial institutions, including the Export-Import Bank, to facilitate investment and expand commercial ties.
Ambassador Greer acknowledged Pakistan’s continued engagement in the negotiations and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to maintaining the positive momentum of bilateral trade discussions.
Both sides expressed confidence that remaining issues could be addressed through continued technical-level engagement and agreed to maintain regular consultations to finalize the proposed reciprocal trade framework.
The US side also recognized progress made by Pakistan in areas including labor and regulatory reforms, including measures related to compliance with international standards concerning forced labor.
The latest developments reflect a broader effort by Pakistan and the United States to strengthen their longstanding relationship through cooperation on shared challenges and opportunities.
