Pentagon Review Set to Expose Full Fallout of Chaotic U.S. Exit from Afghanistan

The Pentagon has announced that a comprehensive review of the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan, conducted after the August 2021 exit, is expected to be finalized in the coming months. According to U.S. media outlet Stars and Stripes, the special panel assigned to examine the circumstances surrounding the withdrawal has largely completed its investigation.

The panel, established in 2025 under the directive of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, was tasked with conducting a detailed assessment of the chaotic end of the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan, which concluded nearly two decades of American engagement in the region.

During the withdrawal, a suicide bombing at Kabul airport claimed the lives of 13 U.S. service members, marking one of the most tragic and defining moments of the operation. The review team has examined over nine million documents across multiple agencies and conducted extensive interviews with senior military and civilian officials involved in planning and executing the withdrawal.

A Pentagon spokesperson emphasized that the final report will provide detailed findings and actionable recommendations aimed at preventing similar operational failures in future military engagements.

The August 2021 withdrawal triggered the rapid collapse of the Afghan government and the subsequent takeover by Taliban forces, drawing widespread criticism of U.S. planning, coordination, and intelligence assessments, particularly during the final days at Kabul airport. Analysts have highlighted that the 2020 agreement between the U.S. and the Taliban, signed during the Trump administration, significantly shaped the timeline and conditions of the withdrawal.

Preliminary reviews suggest that both the Trump and Biden administrations share responsibility for aspects of the withdrawal’s execution and its consequences, including the fall of the Afghan government and the ensuing humanitarian and security crisis.

The Pentagon has reiterated its commitment to transparency, stating that the forthcoming report will serve as a blueprint for improving the planning, execution, and oversight of future U.S. military operations worldwide.
